Patriotic display is a three-date business: Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Presidents Day and Veterans Day add two more for some businesses. That clustering is the whole planning problem. The dates are fixed and known a year in advance, and almost everybody orders late anyway.
Order in April
Work the timeline backwards from Memorial Day.
Production runs three to seven days from **artwork approval**. Shipping is two to five business days, UPS Ground from North Carolina. So a printed blimp needs roughly two weeks of runway, and that is before you allow any time for deciding what the artwork says.
April is comfortable. Mid-May is tight. The week before is not a plan.
If you are buying plain colour rather than printed artwork, a 5.5-foot sphere that is in stock ships in one to two days — much more forgiving.
Printed, or just colour?
**Plain spheres.** $350 each plus $27 shipping. Red, white and blue spheres in a run along a frontage is a strong, simple look, and it needs no print cycle at all. Three spheres cost $1,050 and cover a lot of ground.
**Printed blimp.** $1,526 plus $135 shipping, with full-colour artwork on both sides included. Worth it if you have a specific sale message tied to the holiday, or want your name in the air rather than just seasonal colour.
The important warning: **do not print a date or a year.** A blimp that says “July 4th 2026” is a single-use item bought at a reusable price. Print your name and logo, fly it on all three weekends and every year after.
One fill covers the weekend
Helium leaves at about one percent per day. A four-day holiday weekend — Friday through Monday — ends at ninety-six percent.
So each of these weekends is a single fill. Fill Thursday, fly Friday through Monday, bring it in.
A blimp takes about 170 cubic feet, roughly $255 at $1.50 per cubic foot from a welding-gas supplier. A sphere takes about 87 cubic feet, roughly $130 — and one 200 cubic foot tank at about $300 fills a sphere twice over.
Across three holiday weekends, a sphere setup runs a couple of hundred dollars in gas for the year.
Summer heat is a real factor
Two of the three dates fall in serious heat, and heat changes lift.
Hot air is thinner, so the difference between it and the helium inside narrows, and the balloon does not fly as hard. On a very hot afternoon a blimp with about three pounds of net lift in mild conditions will be at the low end of that.
The fix is a top-off, not a repair. And do not hang anything extra on the tether line in July — no added pennants, no secondary signage.
The material itself handles the sun. Polyurethane holds up to UV far better than the PVC used in cheap imports, which is why the cheap ones fail first in summer.
The Fourth of July weather problem
Two things collide on this weekend: it is the single highest-visibility date, and it falls in storm season across much of the country.
The rule does not bend. Winds forecast over 25 miles per hour, bring it in. Wind does not wear a balloon out — wind loses one, and losing it on the third of July means the fourth is a bare pole.
In monsoon regions, check the afternoon forecast every morning across the whole weekend. Storms build fast. Assign one named person to the job, on every shift.
Getting years out of one purchase
The economics only work if you reuse.
Units deflate, fold flat and store in the 60 by 26 by 3 inch shipping carton they came in. Polyurethane recovers from folding rather than holding a crease, so a balloon packed away in September comes out in May without a weak line where the fold was. Customers are still flying balloons bought fourteen years ago.
A three-sphere patriotic set bought once and flown on three weekends a year for five years is fifteen weekends of display for $1,050 plus gas. That is the case for buying rather than renting decoration each season.

Within five miles of controlled airspace, call the local tower for permission — a routine call that has never been refused in forty years. Indoors, you need 15 feet of clear ceiling. Anchoring is a sandbag or a fixed tie-off.
